The
Wonders of New Brunswick
One of three maritime provinces, New Brunswick is the one
province in Canada that is bilingual; French and English
speaking people that settled here in the 1700s displacing the
Native Indians, mostly Micmacs. It was constitutionally
done so that no future problems would arise. The name of
the island was derived from the French and English translation
of the German city of Braunschweig, original home of the king of
England at the time. Although not specifically an island,
it is connected to the mainland or Nova Scotia by the Isthmus of
Chignecto. On the southern border sits the Bay of Fundy;
with the tallest tides in the world. The province is
different than the other two maritime provinces that have water
almost all the way around and are affected by the oceanic winds
and currents. The river systems are more important to the
province rather than the seacoasts, which is another factor
different than the other 2 provinces; Nova Scotia and Prince
Edward Island. While the metro area of Moncton
contains the largest population, it is Saint John that is the
biggest in New Brunswick, oldest city in and one of the busiest
ports of Canada. The capital is Fredericton.
There are many rivers running through the province, including;
Miramichi, Saint John, Restigouche, Kennebecasis, St. Croix,
Nepisiguit and the Petitcodiac. The northern area is part
of the Appalachians, and the New Brunswick Lowlands belong to
the rest. More than 80 per cent of the province is forests
and the rest farmland. The main urban areas lie in the
southern part of New Brunswick.
In 1534, the French explorer Cartier came to the area, but it
wasn't until 1604, when Champlain and Dugua started a winter
camp on St. Croix Island, located between New Brunswick and
Maine, that the land began to be settled. Eventually the entire
area became known as Acadia, a French colony, getting inhabited
over the next 150 years. These French settlers became
known as Acadians. Then, after the Seven Years War between
France and England, the province became part of the English
colonies, as well as being considered part of Nova Scotia.
During the following years, New England planters and
Pennsylavnia Dutch settlers arrived in the area.
While the rest of the areas were involved in the American
Revolution, New Brunswick wasn't part of it. About 14,000
loyalists came to the province to escape the troubles of the war
and settle. The colony of New Brunswick was officially
declared in 1784. During the 18th and 19th centuries,
immigrants came to the province and settled in. Most came
from the British isles for one reason or another. Shipbuilding,
logging and farming were the biggest industries during this
time. The fastest clipper ship ever made, the Marco Polo,
launched from St. John is 1851. New Brunswick became part of the
Canadian Federation in 1867, after much discussion and
dissension. Over the years, and with the decline of wood
ships, the province became involved in textile mills and paper
mills. too difficult
and soon tourism was rising.
